Some afterthoughts...
Watched yesterday's World Cup Final between Italy and France.. Being an Italy fan, I was hoping Italy will win yesterday's showdown.. And they did.. Well.. I guess after so many years, it's finally Italy's turn to win the World Cup...
The following will be some of my opinions of the game.. They might not represent what the majority of people think.. They only represent what I feel about the match..
In my opinion, the performance by Italy yesterday wasn't their best.. Yet, I could feel their resolve to win the World Cup.. The scandals back home seemed to make them more united than ever.. There might be times when their defence was caught out by France, but they did so well to cover their tracks.. Especially Cannavaro.. I feel that he is the best defender in this World Cup.. He is always there when the Italy defence need him.. So many times I have seen him breaking up France's attack.. And when he was finally beaten, there is always Buffon at the back, who is ever so ready to stop a shot.. His brilliant saves kept Italy in the game..
I guess the rest of the Italy squad also did their part to the best of their abilities.. But I must also give credit to France.. They also did very well.. But I guess Zidane's moment of madness was a real turning point of the match.. His dismissal really broke France's momentum.. Losing Zidane means losing a captain, a penalty taker, and also an inspirational playmaker.. I guess this also somehow affected France when the match went to penalties..
When it was down to penalties, I was feeling quite nervous.. Given Italy's poor penalty track records, I worry for them.. But I told myself that Buffon will be able to handle this.. In the end, he didn't really do anything.. In fact it was Italy's penalty takers who did the job.. They kept their cool and took the penalties well..
With this, World Cup 2006 belongs to Italy.. Being an Italy fan for around 10 years, I also had my fair share of heartbreak in recent times.. But I guess winning the World Cup marks a new start.. And I hope it is the start of more good things to come..
